I usually try not to talk a lot about the design of things to people myself because I tend to go off on a whole essay but yeah, this does it better than I could. You pretty much summed up exactly what I thought. I'm only talking about the art style and design here, not which version of it is more difficult or interesting to fight against. When I met the original cyberdemon I was both afraid and horrified. Although to be fair I was a child back then but still, the memory of it will create bias and so I can't help but gravitate towards to original version. While I like the modern version of the cyberdemon it lacks details like that which tell a story all by itself. Perhaps that was even the point, to make sure it was perpetually agitated and hyper-aggressive. That is something you would expect from the legions of hell. Regardless of demonic status it was easy to understand why it was pissed. The art style/design is far better in my opinion and the cybernetic enhancements are clearly visible and grotesque, as if it was grafted on with barely a care for pain and comfort.
